  • Use seatguru.com every time you fly. Every time.
  • Until December 31st, you can buy gift certificates for Continental Airlines with a $5 discount for every $100 you spend. 5% off everything? Not a bad deal.
  • Flying one-way? Try the hidden city trick.
  • Know all your alternate airports. There are the easy ones like Oakland vs. San Fran, and Providence vs. Boston, but if you’re brave try the smaller ones like Killeen (an hour north of Austin) or Islip (a couple hours east of NYC). Often you can save quite a bit.
  • If you’re planning a trip and want some flexibility, try to purchase the last flight in the day. With most airlines, you can always standby for a flight earlier on the day that you’re ticketed to leave, and if you miss your flight, you’re put on the next flight free of charge. Let’s say you book your flight for Friday night. If you want to leave earlier in the day, you can just go to the airport and standby. If you want to stay and extra night, you can “miss” your flight, and they’ll put you on the next flight…the next morning. Easy way to give yourself 24 hours of flexibility when flying.
