The Pretty Boy vs. The Evil Grinch

Is anyone else shocked by the post-debate polls that are coming out today? I watched the Vice Presidential debate with 5 other people last night, and we all agreed that Cheney performed better. He spoke more clearly and concisely, handled the gay marraige question masterfully, and just seemed more calm and collected. Is anyone else surprised that most polls are putting Edwards ahead?

  1. Maybe the difference was watching it in a group, but I really don’t think Cheney outperformed Edwards. My initial impression was that Edwards did better, and Cheney came across as unlikeable and generally nasty. In retrospect, I think it was evenly matched, and the polls I’ve seen seem to reflect that.
Is Edwards really polling ahead? I think among undecided voters he is….

  3. Does anyone know what Satan is doing these days, now that Cheney has taken over for him?
Ha, ha, ha. Good one, Leslie.
I think Cheney performed better, but like Beth said, he came off as generally evil. Plus, he lied, like, 87 times.

  5. b: Yeah, all the polls seem to be saying that. For some reason all of us seemed to be uncomfortable every time Edwards talked. Not really sure why…
l: Isn’t there supposed to be a masculine elbow jab somewhere in there?

  9. I learned a couple of things that night. Those little bottles in hotel rooms pack big hangovers, and Edwards can smack himself pretty hard when he keeps messing up. “John, oh darn… I did it again” – whack! I felt like they were going to pipe in some sh*tty Britany Spear music and then he was going to get up and do a little dance. Maybe that was a result of those little bottles!
Oh – and Cheney – now we all know who the real Grim Reaper is.

  11. I was disheartened by the debate because I felt like Cheney sort of accomplished his mission, which was to make Edwards look young, inexperienced, and unqualified. Edwards’ body language was awful– he consistently came across as arrogant and smug, overly emotional, and simply not in control of the debate. He shot himself in the foot several times by using his question time to rebutt Cheney over questions that had already expired, which I took to mean that he couldn’t resist getting in the last word on any given subject.
Overall, just not a great performance.
I think he did a decent job of portraying Cheney as an evil liar who doesn’t have the best interests of the people at heart, but who couldn’t do that? Only a very basic understanding of the facts is required to reach that conclusion.
I had to leave the room on a couple of occasions because I was angry with the crap answers he was giving. “We’re both FOR and AGAINST gay marriage!” WTF? Between gay marriage and Israel/Palestine policy, there’s plenty for me to dislike about their platform.
Cheney wasn’t great, either, though, which is probably why the polls look the way they do right now. He looks like some sort of Frankenstein’s monster, and his monotone way of speaking is curmudgeonly at best. As several people have noted, he lied consistently, and Edwards called him on it pretty regularly.
Overall, I came away exhausted and sad. I wish that Kerry/Edwards could give me a stronger reason to vote for them other than “Well, anyone must be better than Bush.”

  13. And I would like to make sure that everyone checks out the site that Cheney mentioned to “make his case”. I think it’s pretty much an automatic loss when you send millions of Americans to the site of the arch rival billionare that’s trying to get you out of office by actually putting together an articulate and well thought out argument (and spending millions of dollars doing it). Ooops. link
